Best 7shifts Alternatives in 2026: 14 Tools for Restaurant and Shift-Based Teams
Turn this article into takeaways for your work.
Each assistant summarizes the article only for you and suggests best practices for your work.
Updated August 2026: every price below was checked against the vendor's own pricing page this month, with quote-only vendors labeled as such instead of given a remembered number.
For most restaurant operators leaving 7shifts, the honest answer is Homebase if you run one or two sites and want a flat per-location bill, Connecteam or Sling if you want to stop paying by the headcount band, and Schedulefly if you just want a small flat monthly number with no tiers to outgrow. This guide covers 14 alternatives, five of them built specifically for food service, evaluated on published pricing, free-tier caps, and whether the billing basis punishes you for hiring.
The reason that last point matters more here than in any other scheduling comparison is buried in how 7shifts prices. It bills per location, which most listicles do mention. What almost none of them state is that every tier also caps employee count, so the two limits interact. A 30-person restaurant on Essentials that hires one more server does not get a new feature. It gets a bill that doubles. Understanding that cliff is the whole reason to read past the comparison table, and it is what the cost models below are built around.
Key Facts
- 60% of service-sector workers receive less than two weeks' notice of their schedules, and 57% face last-minute changes to shift timing, per the Shift Project, the Harvard Kennedy School and UCSF research initiative that surveys hourly service workers nationally. (The Shift Project)
- Accommodation and food services posted a 4.5% quits rate in June 2026, roughly double the 2.2% rate across the total private sector, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. (BLS JOLTS Table 4)
- 42% of restaurant operators reported their restaurant was not profitable last year, and more than 9 in 10 cite labor among their significant cost challenges, per the National Restaurant Association's 2026 State of the Restaurant Industry report. (National Restaurant Association)
- The restaurant industry has averaged a 79.6% annual turnover rate over the past decade, according to Toast's analysis of BLS data (vendor research, published by a restaurant POS company). (Toast)
- The average restaurant employee earned nearly 23% of their income in tips in 2024, which is why tip pooling accuracy is a scheduling-software requirement and not a nice-to-have, per Square's 2025 restaurant data report (vendor research). (Square)
How 7shifts Actually Prices: Two Caps, Not One
7shifts is a good product and it is worth saying so before taking it apart. Tip pooling, labor forecasting against POS sales data, shift-bid workflows, and a team-communication layer built for a kitchen and a floor are genuinely better than what a general-purpose scheduling tool bolts on. If you run restaurants, its feature set is aimed squarely at you.
The pricing is where people get surprised. Here is the published ladder, checked against 7shifts.com/pricing in August 2026. Annual billing is 10% cheaper than monthly, and the page notes these are new-customer prices subject to change.
| Tier | Monthly, per location | Annual, per location | Employee cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comp (free) | $0 | $0 | Up to 15 employees, single location |
| Essentials | $44.99/location/month | $39.99/location/month | Up to 30 employees |
| Pro | $89.99/location/month | $79.99/location/month | Up to 60 employees |
| Premium | $149.99/location/month | $134.99/location/month | Unlimited employees |
One asterisk on that page deserves its own sentence, because it is routinely misreported: 7shifts Payroll costs $39.99 per month per location plus $6 per month for every employee paid, and it is included at the Premium tier. The $6 per employee charge applies only if you actually run payroll through 7shifts. A Premium customer who pays their team elsewhere pays the $134.99 annual per-location rate and nothing further.
Also watch the number itself. $39.99 appears twice in the 7shifts price list and means two different things: it is the Essentials annual per-location rate, and it is separately the standalone Payroll add-on rate per location. If you see $39.99 quoted somewhere without a label, you cannot tell which product it refers to. This article labels it every time.
The Real Problem: Your Bill Moves When You Hire, Not When You Upgrade
Most software makes you pay more when you ask for more. 7shifts makes you pay more when you staff up, even if your feature needs never change. Because the employee cap sits on the same tier as the feature set, crossing a headcount band is a forced upgrade. Here is what that looks like at one location on annual billing, with no 7shifts Payroll.
| Employees at one location | Tier the cap forces | Annual rate per location | Effective cost per employee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | Comp (free) | $0 | $0 |
| 16 | Essentials | $39.99/month | $2.50 |
| 30 | Essentials | $39.99/month | $1.33 |
| 31 | Pro | $79.99/month | $2.58 |
| 60 | Pro | $79.99/month | $1.33 |
| 61 | Premium | $134.99/month | $2.21 |
| 90 | Premium | $134.99/month | $1.50 |
Read the effective column and the sawtooth is obvious. Efficiency improves as you fill a band, then collapses the moment you cross it. Hiring your 31st employee raises the bill 100%, from $39.99 to $79.99 per location per month, for identical scheduling needs. Hiring the 61st raises it another 69%. A 35-person single restaurant is not on Pro because it needs demand forecasting. It is on Pro because it hired five people.
That structure is fine if your headcount is stable and sits near the top of a band. It is expensive if you sit just past the bottom of one, and it is genuinely painful for a seasonal operation whose summer roster crosses a cap that the winter roster does not.

Billing Basis Matters More Than the Headline Number
This category mixes four different pricing bases, and a table of raw dollar figures misleads even when every number in it is correct. $30 per location and $2.50 per user are not comparable quantities. Read this column first, then the cost models.
| Tool | Billing basis | What changes the bill | Free tier cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7shifts | Per location, plus an employee cap per tier | Adding a site, or crossing a headcount band | 15 employees, single location |
| Homebase | Per location, unlimited employees on paid tiers | Adding a site only | 1 location, 10 employees |
| When I Work | Per user | Every hire | None (14-day trial) |
| Deputy | Per user, with a $30 minimum per monthly invoice | Every hire, plus each add-on module | None |
| Connecteam | Per hub, first 30 users included | Adding a hub, or users beyond 30 | 10 users across all hubs |
| Sling | Per user | Every hire above the free cap | 30 users, no time tracking |
| ZoomShift | Per active team member | Every active hire above the free cap | 20 active members, 1 location |
| Push Operations | Per location, banded by employee count | Adding a site, or crossing a band | None |
| Schedulefly | Flat monthly by total staff band | Crossing a staff band | None (30-day trial) |
| TCP Humanity Schedule | Per employee, billed annually | Every hire | None (trial) |
| Planday | Starter $2.99/user/mo, 5-user minimum | Plus $4.49/user/mo plus a $15/mo subscription fee, 10-user minimum | None (30-day trial) |
| Buddy Punch | $19 monthly base fee plus per user | Every hire, on top of a fixed floor | None |
| Jibble | Free for unlimited users on the core tier | Nothing on the free tier | Unlimited users |
| Fourth (HotSchedules) | Not published | Not published | None |

Cost at Real Headcounts: One Location
Here is one site at four headcounts, using annual rates where the vendor publishes one and monthly rates where it does not. Each row states its basis so the comparison stays honest.
| Provider (basis) | 12 employees | 28 employees | 45 employees | 90 employees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7shifts (per location, annual) | $0 (Comp) | $39.99 (Essentials) | $79.99 (Pro) | $134.99 (Premium) |
| Homebase Essentials (per location, annual) | $24 | $24 | $24 | $24 |
| When I Work Essentials (per user, monthly rate) | $30 | $70 | $112.50 | $225 |
| Deputy Lite (per user, monthly, $30 floor) | $60 | $140 | $225 | $450 |
| Connecteam Operations Basic (per hub, annual) | $29 | $29 | $41 | $77 |
| Sling Premium (per user, annual) | $20.40 | $47.60 | $76.50 | $153 |
| ZoomShift Starter (per active member, annual) | $0 (free tier) | $56 | $90 | $180 |
| Schedulefly (flat, by staff band) | $30 | $40 | $50 | No published band |
| Buddy Punch Starter (per user, annual, plus $19 base) | $78.88 | $158.72 | $243.55 | $468.10 |
| Jibble (free, unlimited users) | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 |
Two things jump out. At one location, 7shifts is competitive at every headcount and outright cheap at 90 employees, where per-user tools have run away from it. Per-location pricing is a real advantage at scale on a single site, and anyone telling you 7shifts is expensive has not run this row. The problem is not the level. It is the steps, and what happens when you add sites.
Cost at Real Headcounts: Four Locations
Now the same exercise across four sites with 20 employees each, 80 people in total. Per-user and per-hub tools do not care how many buildings you occupy. Per-location tools multiply.
| Provider (basis) | Monthly cost, 4 sites, 80 people |
|---|---|
| Homebase Essentials (per location, annual) | $96 |
| Connecteam Operations Basic (per hub, annual) | $69 |
| Sling Premium (per user, annual) | $136 |
| ZoomShift Starter (per active member, annual) | $160 |
| 7shifts, if the band counts per site (per location, annual) | $159.96 (Essentials x 4) |
| When I Work Essentials (per user, monthly rate) | $200 |
| Deputy Lite (per user, monthly) | $400 |
| Buddy Punch Starter (per user, annual, plus $19 base) | $418.20 |
| 7shifts, if the band counts across the account | $539.96 (Premium x 4) |
| Jibble (free, unlimited users) | $0 |
| Push Operations (per location, banded) | Custom quote (above 50 employees) |
| Schedulefly (flat, by staff band) | No published band above 79 staff |
That 7shifts row appears twice on purpose. The published page states the employee cap per tier and the price per location, but it does not spell out whether the band counts headcount at each site or across the whole account. The gap between those two readings is $380 a month, or about $4,560 a year, on the same 80 people. Ask 7shifts which reading applies to your account before you budget a multi-site rollout. Any article that prints a single confident multi-site 7shifts figure is guessing at that answer.
Homebase at $96 for the same four sites is the clearest structural win in this table, because its paid tiers carry no employee cap at all. Connecteam at $69 is cheaper still, though you are buying a deskless operations app rather than a restaurant-native one.
Restaurant Feature Fit
Price is only half the decision. If you are leaving 7shifts, check which of its food-service features you actually use before you shortlist a general-purpose tool that does not have them.
| Tool | Tip pooling | POS integration | Labor forecast vs sales | Payroll | Vertical focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7shifts (incumbent, for reference) | Yes | Deep, restaurant-specific | Yes | Native add-on, included at Premium | Restaurants only |
| Homebase | Yes | Yes, strong for restaurant and retail POS | Yes | Add-on | Restaurant, retail |
| When I Work | No | Limited | On higher tiers | Integration only | General shift work |
| Deputy | Yes | Yes | Yes | Add-on (enabled by Paycor) | General, restaurant, retail, healthcare |
| Connecteam | No | Limited | No | Integration only | Deskless, field, delivery |
| Sling | No | Limited | No | No | General small teams |
| ZoomShift | No | Limited | No | Export only | General small teams |
| Push Operations | Yes | Yes | Yes | Native | Restaurants, hospitality |
| Schedulefly | No | No | No | No | Restaurants only |
| TCP Humanity Schedule | No | No | Yes | Integration | Healthcare, 24/7 coverage |
| Planday | No | Yes | Yes | Integration | European hospitality, retail |
| Buddy Punch | No | Limited | No | Add-on | General hourly teams |
| Jibble | No | No | No | Integration | Hourly and shift attendance |
| Fourth (HotSchedules) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Native | Restaurants, hospitality, enterprise |
| Restaurant365 | Yes | Deep, restaurant-specific | Yes | Native | Restaurants, multi-unit |
Team Size and Structure Fit
| Tool | Best team size | Structure | Deployment style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homebase | 1 to 100 per location | Single or small multi-site restaurant, retail | Self-serve |
| When I Work | 5 to 500 | Retail, restaurant, hospitality | Self-serve |
| Deputy | 20 to 2,000 | Multi-site restaurant, retail, healthcare | Self-serve, sales for scale |
| Connecteam | 10 to 500+ | Deskless, field, delivery, multi-department | Self-serve, per-hub upgrade |
| Sling | 1 to 30 free, scales beyond | Small teams, single or few sites | Self-serve |
| ZoomShift | 1 to 200 | Small single-location teams | Self-serve |
| Push Operations | 15 to 500 | Restaurant groups wanting payroll in-house | Sales-assisted |

| TCP Humanity Schedule | 50 to 1,000+ | Healthcare, call centers, 24/7 operations | Annual, some sales involvement |
| Planday | 10 to 500 | UK and EU hospitality, retail | Self-serve entry, sales for Pro |
| Buddy Punch | 5 to 300 | General hourly and shift teams | Self-serve |
| Jibble | 1 to unlimited | Hourly, shift and field attendance | Self-serve |
| Fourth (HotSchedules) | 200 to 20,000+ | Enterprise restaurant and hospitality groups | Sales-led |
| Restaurant365 | 50 to 5,000+ | Multi-unit restaurant groups | Sales-led |
1. Homebase: Per Location Like 7shifts, But Without the Headcount Cap
Homebase is the closest structural answer to the specific complaint this article is about. It bills per location the way 7shifts does, so operators who like that model do not have to relearn a per-user spreadsheet. The difference is what happens when you hire: Homebase paid tiers carry unlimited employees per location, so there is no band to cross and no bill that doubles because a server said yes. A 90-person restaurant and a 20-person restaurant pay the same $24 per location per month on annual billing.
One claim about Homebase needs correcting before you shop it, because it is repeated constantly and it is now wrong. Homebase's free Basic plan is not "free for unlimited employees." It covers 1 location and up to 10 employees. Past that, you are on a paid tier. That still compares well against the 7shifts Comp plan's 15-employee ceiling on the free side, but the gap is smaller than the internet says.
Feature-wise it is the strongest non-specialist here for food service: POS integrations, tip management, labor cost tracking against sales, and easy onboarding. If Homebase is the tool you are shopping away from, see our Homebase alternatives guide, and if it is down to Homebase against the deskless all-rounder, see Homebase vs Connecteam.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Unlimited employees per location on every paid tier | A free plan above 10 employees |
| Per-location billing that never jumps on a hire | Cheap math across many locations |
| Strong POS, tip and labor-cost tooling for restaurants | 7shifts' depth of shift-bid and tip-pool rules |
| Free tier for one small site to start on | Multi-location pricing that scales down per site |
Pricing: Free Basic (1 location, up to 10 employees). Essentials $30/location/month on monthly billing, $24/location/month on annual. Plus $70 monthly, $56 annual. All-in-One $120 monthly, $96 annual. Annual billing saves 20%. Best for: One to four restaurant or retail sites that want per-location billing with no headcount cliff. Not ideal for: Operators with many small sites, where per-location pricing compounds faster than per-user pricing.
2. When I Work: Per-Person Pricing With No Bands to Cross
If the 7shifts sawtooth is what you are escaping, per-user pricing is the structural opposite: the bill moves in a straight line, a few dollars at a time, and nothing about it changes when you cross an arbitrary threshold. When I Work is the most widely used general-purpose tool priced that way, with drag-and-drop scheduling, shift swaps, team messaging, and time tracking as the core loop.
Two corrections matter here. First, When I Work has no free plan. The old free tier that covered up to 75 employees is gone, and there is a 14-day trial in its place, so do not shortlist it expecting to run free. Second, When I Work publishes no annual rate at all. Annual billing is offered, but the page shows only the per-user monthly figures, so any specific annual number you see quoted elsewhere was computed by a writer, not published by the vendor. Ask for the annual figure in writing before you assume a discount.
For a straight one-for-one on scheduling depth against the other big general-purpose option, see our Deputy vs When I Work comparison. If When I Work is itself what you are leaving, we cover that in When I Work alternatives.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Linear per-user pricing with no headcount bands | A free plan; only a 14-day trial |
| Fast, familiar scheduling and shift-swap workflow | A published annual rate |
| No per-location charge, so multi-site costs nothing extra | Restaurant tip pooling |
| Team messaging and shift confirmation built in | 7shifts' POS-driven labor forecasting depth |
Pricing: Essentials $2.50/user/month, Pro $5/user/month, Premium $8/user/month. No free plan, 14-day trial only. The vendor publishes no separate annual rate. Best for: Multi-site operators whose headcount changes often and who want a bill that tracks it smoothly. Not ideal for: Restaurants that rely on tip pooling or sales-linked labor forecasting.
3. Deputy: The Upgrade Path, Not the Cheap Escape
Deputy is where restaurant operators go when they have outgrown scheduling and need compliance. Break rules, award interpretation, GPS-verified clock-in, fatigue management, and workforce analytics deep enough to run a couple of hundred sites are its actual product. For a growing group that is starting to worry about labor law rather than about who covers Friday, that depth is worth paying for.
It is not the budget move. Deputy has no free plan, and every monthly-billed account carries a $30 minimum spend per invoice: a 4-person crew on Lite at $5 per user lists at $20 but invoices at $30. Payroll, HR, Messaging+ and Analytics+ then price separately on top of the base rate rather than bundling. One caution: a set of retired Deputy prices ($3.50 and $4.90 tiers) still circulates in older comparisons, and those tiers no longer exist. Full breakdown in our Deputy alternatives guide.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| The deepest compliance and award-interpretation tooling here | A free plan of any kind |
| Mature workforce analytics for multi-site groups | A bundled price; add-ons stack separately |
| Per-user billing with no location charge | An invoice below $30 on monthly billing |
| Payroll, HR and messaging available as first-party modules | 7shifts' restaurant-native tip-pool workflows |
Pricing: Lite $5/user/month, Core $6.50/user/month, Pro $9/user/month (USD, excluding tax). A $30 minimum monthly spend applies per invoice on monthly Lite, Core and Pro plans. Add-ons: Payroll (enabled by Paycor) $8/user/month plus a $49/month base fee, HR $2/user/month, Messaging+ $1.95/user/month, Analytics+ $1.50/user/month. Best for: Growing multi-site groups that need compliance depth more than they need a lower bill. Not ideal for: Small single-site restaurants; the $30 floor and add-on stack work against you at that size.
4. Connecteam: Pay Per Hub, Not Per Headcount Band
Connecteam prices on a basis nobody else in this list uses: per hub, with the first 30 users included in every paid tier. Buy the Operations hub and you get scheduling, GPS time clock, task checklists and forms for 30 people at one flat price, with extra users after that costing between $0.80 and $4.20 a month depending on tier. That is the cheapest way in this comparison to cover a mid-size crew, and it is why Connecteam wins the four-location model above at $69 a month for 80 people.
The catch is the hub structure. Communications and HR & Skills are separate purchases at the same base rates, so a team wanting scheduling plus comms plus HR documents buys three things, not one. For a restaurant group that only needs scheduling and a time clock, one hub is fine and the math is excellent. Note also that Connecteam's pricing toggle renders reversed on some devices: the annual figure is always the lower one. If Connecteam is what you are leaving, see our Connecteam alternatives guide.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| First 30 users included in every paid tier | A single price covering all three hubs |
| Extra seats from $0.80/month on annual billing, the cheapest scaling here | Restaurant tip pooling or POS-linked forecasting |
| A genuinely free plan for up to 10 users, all hubs | A food-service-specific feature set |
| GPS geofencing and forms built for deskless crews | Deputy-grade compliance tooling |
Pricing: Small Business plan free for up to 10 users across all hubs. Operations Hub: Basic $35/month monthly, $29 annual, extra users $1.00 monthly or $0.80 annual; Advanced $59 monthly, $49 annual, extra $3.00 or $2.50; Expert $119 monthly, $99 annual, extra $5.00 or $4.20. Communications Hub and HR & Skills Hub carry the same $35/$29, $59/$49 and $119/$99 base rates with extra-user rates of $0.60/$0.50, $1.80/$1.50 and $3.60/$3.00 monthly/annual. Enterprise is custom. Best for: Crews of roughly 20 to 100 that want one flat hub price instead of a per-person or per-band bill. Not ideal for: Restaurants that need tip pooling and sales-linked labor forecasting.
5. Sling: The Biggest Free Cap in This Comparison
Sling's free plan covers scheduling, shift swaps, time-off requests and messaging for up to 30 users, which is double the 15-employee ceiling on the 7shifts Comp plan. For an independent restaurant with a roster under 30 that mainly needs a schedule people can actually see, that is the cheapest credible answer in this entire article.
Two things to get right. The free tier is not unlimited, despite how often it is described that way: the cap is 30 users. And it has no time tracking, so if you need a clock-in record for payroll you are on a paid plan from day one. Those paid plans are still the lowest per-user rates here. We put Sling against the incumbent and the budget option in 7shifts vs Sling vs ZoomShift, and if Sling is what you are leaving, see Sling alternatives.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Free scheduling and messaging for up to 30 users | Time tracking on the free plan |
| The lowest paid per-user rates in this comparison | Tip pooling or restaurant labor forecasting |
| No location charge, so extra sites cost nothing | GPS geofencing |
| A 15-day free trial on paid plans | Payroll of any kind |
Pricing: Free for up to 30 users, scheduling and messaging only, no time tracking. Premium $2.00/user/month monthly, $1.70 annual. Business $4.00/user/month monthly, $3.40 annual. 15-day free trial on paid plans. Best for: Independent restaurants under 30 staff that want free scheduling, or any team wanting the cheapest paid per-user rate here. Not ideal for: Anyone who needs a time clock without paying, or restaurant-specific tip workflows.
6. ZoomShift: The Cheapest Paid Ladder, With the Smallest Free Tier
ZoomShift keeps the pitch deliberately narrow: schedule building, shift confirmation, availability and team messaging for small hourly teams, free for up to 20 active team members at one location. The word "active" is doing work in that sentence, and it is the number to check against a seasonal roster, since a team that swells past 20 in summer crosses the cap the same way a 7shifts team crosses a band.
Where ZoomShift wins is the paid ladder underneath it. Starter at $2 per user per month on annual billing is the lowest entry rate of any tool here that includes a time clock, and there is no minimum invoice and no per-location charge waiting behind it. For a small operator whose complaint about 7shifts is simply the absolute number, this is the shortest path to a smaller one.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Free scheduling for up to 20 active members, 1 location | A time clock or timesheets on the free tier |
| Cheapest paid entry rate that includes time tracking | Multi-location support on the free plan |
| No minimum invoice and no per-location fee | Restaurant tip pooling or POS forecasting |
| Simple enough to roll out in an afternoon | Deep workforce analytics |
Pricing: Essentials free for up to 20 active team members at 1 location. Starter $2.50/user/month monthly, $2 annual. Premium $5/user/month monthly, $4 annual. As with Connecteam, the pricing toggle can render reversed: the annual figure is the lower one. Best for: Small single-site teams that want the lowest possible paid rate with a time clock included. Not ideal for: Multi-site operators or teams above 20 people wanting to stay free.
7. Push Operations: Restaurant Payroll and Scheduling as One System
Push Operations is the pick for a restaurant group whose real frustration is not the schedule at all, it is running scheduling in one system and payroll in another and reconciling the two every fortnight. Push builds scheduling, time tracking, HR and native restaurant payroll into one platform, so hours flow to pay without an export step. For an operator managing tipped wages, split shifts and multiple pay rates per employee, that single-system argument is genuinely strong.
It is also the most expensive published entry point here by a wide margin: $200 per month per location for up to 15 employees, rising with plan and headcount, with anything above 50 employees quoted custom. Against the 7shifts Comp plan at $0 for the same 15 people that looks absurd, until you remember you are buying a payroll engine rather than a scheduling app. Judge it against your current scheduling tool plus your current payroll provider combined.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Native restaurant payroll, not a payroll integration | A free tier or a cheap entry point |
| Tipped wage, split shift and multi-rate handling built in | Published pricing above 50 employees |
| One system for scheduling, time, HR and pay | A price that competes with scheduling-only tools |
| Built specifically for hospitality operators | Self-serve signup at scale |
Pricing: From $200/month per location for up to 15 employees, rising with plan and employee count. Above 50 employees is a custom quote. Best for: Restaurant groups that want to collapse scheduling and payroll into one vendor. Not ideal for: Anyone comparing on scheduling price alone; Push is not competing in that race.
8. Schedulefly: A Flat Number, No Tiers, No Per-User Math
Schedulefly has been doing the same thing for independent restaurants for years, and it is the most direct philosophical answer to the 7shifts band problem: there are no feature tiers at all. You get the whole product, and the only thing that moves the price is how many people are on your staff list. Up to 19 staff is $30 a month. Twenty to 39 is $40. Forty to 59 is $50. Sixty to 79 is $60.
Notice what that does to the sawtooth. Crossing a Schedulefly band costs an extra $10 a month, not an extra 100%. Crossing from 19 to 20 staff raises your bill by a third of what a single takeout order costs. Compare that to the $39.99 to $79.99 Essentials-to-Pro jump on 7shifts annual billing for the same kind of milestone and the difference in philosophy is the whole pitch. There are no contracts and a 30-day free trial.
What you give up is everything modern. No POS-linked labor forecasting, no tip pooling engine, no GPS clock-in, no mobile-first redesign. Schedulefly does scheduling, staff communication and a document library, deliberately and simply. It also publishes no band above 79 staff, so a larger group needs to ask directly. For a 40-seat independent that wants the schedule out on time and nothing else, that narrowness is the feature.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| A flat monthly price with every feature included | Any modern labor analytics |
| Band increases of $10, not 100% | Tip pooling or POS integration |
| No contracts and a 30-day free trial | A published price above 79 staff |
| Genuinely simple, fast to roll out | A mobile-first modern interface |
Pricing: Flat monthly by total staff count: up to 19 staff $30/month; 20 to 39 staff $40/month; 40 to 59 staff $50/month; 60 to 79 staff $60/month. 30-day free trial, no contracts. No band published above 79 staff. Best for: Independent restaurants that want one small predictable number and no feature tiers to manage. Not ideal for: Groups needing labor forecasting, tip pooling or multi-site reporting.
9. TCP Humanity Schedule: Coverage-First Scheduling for Operations That Never Close
Humanity, now sold as Humanity Schedule under TCP Software, solves a harder scheduling problem than a dinner rush: continuous coverage. Its Demand Scheduler builds rosters from forecasted need rather than a manager dragging blocks around a grid, and it handles credential and skill-based assignment, which matters if certain shifts legally require certain qualifications. Hotels with 24-hour front desks, hospital kitchens, casino floors and airport concessions are the natural fit here more than a single restaurant.
The pricing is transparent about the tier but not the commitment. Essentials is $2.75 per employee per month billed annually for up to 250 employees, and Professional starts at $3.75, also annually. The vendor publishes no monthly billing rate at all, so budget for an annual commitment. Being per employee with no location charge makes it cheaper than 7shifts for a multi-site operator with a small roster at each site, and dearer for one busy restaurant.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Demand-driven auto-scheduling for continuous coverage | Any published monthly billing rate |
| Credential and skill-based shift assignment | A free plan |
| Per-employee pricing with no per-location charge | Restaurant tip pooling |
| Volume consideration on the Professional tier | Month-to-month flexibility |
Pricing: Essentials $2.75/employee/month billed annually, up to 250 employees. Professional from $3.75/employee/month billed annually. Enterprise is a custom quote. No monthly billing rates are published. Best for: Hospitality and healthcare operations that run 24/7 and schedule against forecast demand. Not ideal for: Single restaurants wanting month-to-month billing or tip-pool workflows.
10. Planday: European Hospitality Compliance, With No Price Tag
Planday covers scheduling, time tracking and payroll-ready reporting the way 7shifts does, but built around UK and EU labor rules: working time regulations, break entitlements and the reporting formats European payroll bureaus expect. For an operator running restaurants in London, Copenhagen or Berlin, that regional fit is worth more than another tip-pooling feature.
Planday does publish per-user prices, though its pricing page renders by region, which is why so many comparisons report that it publishes nothing. The US list shows Starter at $2.99 per user a month with a 5-user minimum and Plus at $4.49 per user a month plus a $15.00 monthly subscription fee with a 10-user minimum. Pro is custom-quoted, and there is a 30-day free trial on the self-serve tiers. Because the figures follow your region, ask for a quote in your own currency rather than budgeting off the US numbers. We compare it directly against two other Europe-leaning options in Buddy Punch vs Planday vs Shiftboard.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Scheduling built around UK and EU labor compliance | Any published pricing figure |
| Payroll-ready reporting for European bureaus | Self-serve budgeting before a sales call |
| Revenue and POS integrations for hospitality | A free plan |
| A free trial across tiers | US-centric payroll depth |
Pricing: No published price. The Starter plan carries a 5-user minimum. Higher tiers and Pro are quoted directly. Free trial available. Best for: UK and EU hospitality groups that need scheduling aligned to European labor rules. Not ideal for: Anyone who wants to compare an exact number before booking a call.
11. Buddy Punch: Attendance First, With Its Own Floor to Watch
Buddy Punch inverts the usual bundle: the base product is time and attendance, with punch clock, overtime calculation and job or location tracking, and scheduling is something you add rather than something you get. For an operator whose actual 7shifts complaint is that they only ever used the clock-in half, that modularity is appealing.
Check the arithmetic before assuming it is cheaper. Buddy Punch charges a flat $19 monthly base fee on every plan, on top of the per-user rate, which is its own version of a floor. A 12-person restaurant on Starter billed annually pays $19 plus 12 times $4.99, which comes to $78.88 a month. The same 12 people fit inside the free 7shifts Comp plan at $0, and inside Homebase Essentials at $24. The base fee stops mattering as headcount grows, but at small restaurant sizes it can flip the comparison entirely, so quote both halves or the number means nothing.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Strong time and attendance with multiple punch methods | A free plan |
| Modular: add scheduling or GPS only when needed | A single all-inclusive price |
| Per-user rates that stay flat regardless of location count | Restaurant tip pooling or POS forecasting |
| Transparent published pricing on the vendor's own docs | A cheap entry point at small headcounts |
Pricing: A $19/month base fee applies to every plan, plus per user: Starter $4.99/user/month annual, $5.99 monthly; Pro $6.99 annual, $7.99 monthly; Advanced $12.99 annual, $13.99 monthly. Best for: Teams that mainly need attendance tracking and will add scheduling later. Not ideal for: Small restaurants under about 20 people, where the base fee dominates the bill.
12. Jibble: Free Attendance for Unlimited People, Genuinely
Almost every "free forever" claim in this category has a cap hiding behind it. Jibble's does not. Its core tier is free for unlimited users, covering mobile and web clock-in, basic timesheets, and Slack, Teams and QuickBooks integrations. Face verification at clock-in and GPS stamping mean it solves buddy punching, which is a real problem in a kitchen where one person can badge in three friends.
What Jibble does not do is replace 7shifts. It is an attendance layer, not a scheduling engine: no tip pooling, no sales-linked labor forecasting, no shift-bid workflow. The realistic use is either as a free standalone for a team whose scheduling lives in a group chat, or as the attendance half of a two-tool stack alongside something cheap like Sling. Paid tiers with deeper geofencing exist, but those rates do not render on its public pricing page, so confirm them directly. For the wider category, see the best time tracking software for 2026.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Free forever for unlimited users, no seat-count catch | Scheduling depth of any kind |
| Face verification and GPS stamping at no cost | Tip pooling or labor forecasting |
| Slack, Teams and QuickBooks integrations on the free plan | Published paid-tier pricing |
| Works as the attendance half of a cheap two-tool stack | A single-vendor replacement for 7shifts |
Pricing: Free forever for unlimited users on the core tier, covering mobile and web clock-in, basic timesheets and core integrations. Paid tiers exist for deeper geofencing and payroll features, but the vendor does not publish those figures on its public pricing page. Best for: Restaurants that only need verified attendance, or teams pairing a free clock with a cheap scheduler. Not ideal for: Anyone who needs scheduling and attendance from one vendor.
13. Fourth (HotSchedules): The Enterprise Hospitality Standard
HotSchedules, now part of Fourth, is what large restaurant and hospitality groups have run for years, and it is the natural upgrade path for an operator who has outgrown 7shifts rather than one shopping for something cheaper. Labor forecasting across dozens or hundreds of units, inventory and purchasing alongside scheduling, and enterprise-grade reporting are what it sells. The scale it is built for assumes a regional or national footprint, an above-store operations team, and a real implementation project.
Fourth publishes no pricing anywhere. There is no tier list, no starting figure and no self-serve signup, only a demo request. Nothing about that is unusual for enterprise hospitality software, and it is more honest to say so than to repeat a per-unit number from a third-party listicle that no vendor has confirmed. Budget for a sales cycle and a separate implementation fee, and expect the quote to be scoped to your unit count and module selection.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Enterprise labor forecasting across large unit counts | Any published pricing figure |
| Scheduling, inventory and purchasing in one platform | A self-serve signup path |
| Reporting built for above-store operations teams | A free tier or a fast start |
| Long track record in large hospitality groups | Fit for a single independent restaurant |
Pricing: Quote-only. Fourth publishes no pricing figures for HotSchedules on its site. Expect a scoped quote based on unit count and modules, plus a separate implementation fee. Best for: Regional and national restaurant or hospitality groups running dozens of units or more. Not ideal for: Independents and small groups; the product and the sales process both assume scale.
14. Restaurant365: Workforce Bolted to Restaurant Accounting
Restaurant365 approaches the problem from the accounting side rather than the scheduling side. It is a restaurant operating platform covering accounting, inventory, vendor invoices and workforce, so labor becomes one line in the same system that holds food cost and prime cost. For a multi-unit group where the CFO and the operations lead are fighting over two different sources of truth, that consolidation argument is stronger than any individual scheduling feature.
Like Fourth, Restaurant365 publishes no pricing. Its pricing page invites you to build a plan with sales rather than showing tiers or figures. Treat it the same way: no number here is trustworthy unless it comes from your own quote. This is also the largest jump in scope on this list, since you are not replacing a scheduling tool, you are replacing a scheduling tool plus, potentially, your accounting stack. Evaluate it against that combined cost, not against $39.99 a month.
| What you get | What you don't |
|---|---|
| Labor, food cost and accounting in one platform | Any published pricing figure |
| Prime cost visibility without exporting between systems | A scheduling-only price point |
| Purpose-built for multi-unit restaurant groups | A self-serve trial |
| Deep POS integration for restaurant operations | A small, contained implementation |
Pricing: Quote-only. Restaurant365 publishes no pricing figures and routes every visitor to a custom quote. Best for: Multi-unit restaurant groups consolidating accounting, inventory and labor into one system. Not ideal for: Single-site operators looking for a cheaper scheduling app.
What Changed in This Category in 2026
Two shifts are worth knowing before you shortlist, because both invalidate advice still sitting on the first page of search results.
The free tiers shrank. Homebase's free plan is now 1 location and 10 employees rather than unlimited employees, When I Work removed its free plan entirely in favor of a 14-day trial, and Sling's free tier caps at 30 users. Jibble is the notable exception whose "free for unlimited users" claim still holds. If your shortlist was built on a free tier you read about two years ago, rebuild it.
And Jolt, which used to appear on every restaurant operations list, is no longer an independent vendor. Digi announced its acquisition of Jolt for roughly $145.5 million in August 2025, jolt.com/pricing now redirects to a SmartSense quote request, and the successor product launched as SmartSense ONE in January 2026. It publishes no price. Any 2026 article still listing Jolt with a dollar figure has not checked.
How to Choose: Decision Framework
The right 7shifts alternative depends on which constraint actually hurts. If it is the headcount cliff, move to a per-user or unlimited-employee basis. If it is the absolute number, move to a free tier or a flat band. If it is missing capability, the answer is usually a bigger platform, not a cheaper one. For the wider category view, see our roundup of the best employee scheduling software for 2026 and the broader best workforce management software for 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions about 7shifts Alternatives
How does 7shifts pricing actually work?
7shifts bills per location, and each tier also caps how many employees you can have. Comp is free for up to 15 employees at a single location, Essentials covers up to 30 employees at $44.99 per location per month monthly or $39.99 annual, Pro covers up to 60 at $89.99 monthly or $79.99 annual, and Premium is unlimited employees at $149.99 monthly or $134.99 annual. Annual billing is 10% cheaper than monthly.
Why does hiring one person double my 7shifts bill?
Because the employee cap and the feature tier are the same thing. Crossing 30 employees moves you from Essentials to Pro, which takes the annual per-location rate from $39.99 to $79.99 even though your scheduling needs have not changed. Crossing 60 moves you to Premium at $134.99 annual. Most competitors price per user or per location without a headcount band, so their bills rise smoothly instead of in steps.
Does 7shifts Premium really cost an extra $6 per employee?
Only if you run payroll through 7shifts. The $6 per month per employee paid is a 7shifts Payroll charge, and the pricing page's asterisk states it applies only when you pay your team via 7shifts Payroll. A Premium customer paying their team elsewhere pays $134.99 per location per month on annual billing and nothing further. Bought standalone, 7shifts Payroll is $39.99 per month per location plus $6 per employee paid, and it is included at Premium.
What is the cheapest 7shifts alternative for a small restaurant?
For a roster under 30, Sling's free plan covers scheduling, shift swaps and messaging at no cost, though it has no time tracking. ZoomShift is free for up to 20 active team members at one location. If you need a time clock on a paid plan, ZoomShift Starter at $2 per user per month on annual billing and Sling Premium at $1.70 annual are the lowest rates in this comparison.
Which 7shifts alternative has no employee limit?
Homebase paid tiers carry unlimited employees per location, so Essentials at $24 per location per month on annual billing costs the same for 20 people as for 90. Jibble's free tier is unlimited users for attendance only. Per-user tools like When I Work, Sling, ZoomShift and Deputy have no employee cap either, though their bills rise with every hire.
Is Homebase still free for unlimited employees?
No, and this is the most commonly repeated stale claim in the category. The free Basic plan now covers 1 location and up to 10 employees. Unlimited employees per location is a paid-tier benefit, starting at Essentials at $30 per location per month monthly or $24 annual.
Does When I Work have a free plan or an annual discount?
Neither is published. When I Work discontinued the free plan that used to cover up to 75 employees and now offers only a 14-day trial. It also publishes no separate annual rate, only the monthly per-user figures of $2.50 for Essentials, $5 for Pro and $8 for Premium. Any specific annual number you see elsewhere was calculated by a writer, not quoted by the vendor.
Which 7shifts alternatives are built specifically for restaurants?
Homebase, Push Operations, Schedulefly, Fourth (HotSchedules) and Restaurant365 all target food service directly. Homebase suits one to four sites, Schedulefly suits independents wanting a flat price, Push Operations adds native restaurant payroll, and Fourth and Restaurant365 are enterprise options for multi-unit groups. The last three publish no self-serve pricing beyond Push Operations' $200 per location per month entry point.
How much does 7shifts cost for multiple locations?
Multiply the per-location rate by your site count, so four locations on Essentials annual billing is $159.96 per month. What the pricing page does not spell out is whether the employee cap counts headcount at each site or across the whole account. On 80 people across four sites, those two readings differ by roughly $380 a month, so confirm which one applies to your account before budgeting a multi-site rollout.
What to Do Next
Work out which band you sit in today and how close you are to the next one. If your roster is 27 people and growing, you are one hiring push away from a bill that doubles, and that is the moment to move rather than after the invoice arrives. If you sit comfortably at 55 people in one location, 7shifts is genuinely competitive and switching may cost you more in retraining than it saves.
Then pick two alternatives on different billing bases, not two that price the same way, and run both against next month's real schedule. A per-location option like Homebase and a per-user option like Sling or When I Work diverge fast as headcount moves, and seeing that on your own roster tells you more than any table here. If the switch is really about consolidating payroll or accounting, put Push Operations or Restaurant365 in the pilot instead.
